If the machines do all the work, what will people do? In our generation, something new has awakened in the world. Machines that learn. Minds that write. And reason. And create. Robots in the fields. Bringing in the harvest. Building homes. And roads. And whole cities. Day by day, the work of the world is passing from human hands to machines. And with it comes plenty. More food, more goods, more than the world has ever known. Which leaves one great question. If the machines do all the work, what will people do? More than 800 years ago, the Rambam wrote the answer. The sages and prophets longed for the days of the Messiah, not to rule the world, but To be free for Torah and its wisdom. In that time there will be no famine and no war, no jealousy and no competition. Good things will flow in abundance and all delicacies will be as common as dust. No change in nature is needed. The world simply follows its course. The Rambam never spoke of robots, but in a world where machines carry the load, his Vision is no longer hard to imagine. And then, the sound of the great shofar. From every corner of the earth, the exiles come home. By sea and by road, a whole people returning. And a king will arise from the house of David And rebuild the mikdash. And the Beis HaMikdash stands again in glory On its mountain. Crowds go up to Yerushalayim, as in the days of old. And the city is alive with Torah. The machines carry the work of the world. The fields, the vineyards, the roads, and people are free at last. The nations too Come to learn, and the occupation of the whole world will be only to know Hashem, For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of Hashem as the waters cover The sea.
