Episode 5: The Art Of Balance

We’ve been learning that everything is Godly energy: the substance the world is made of, the laws that govern its behavior, and the drama of how everything interacts.

Once we’ve established that, the Alter Rebbe concluded that we don’t actually exist! Being that everything we are made of and everything we think and do is all actively generated and orchestrated by God, then everything is God alone - nothing else! We are like a puppet in the hands of a master, but even way more than that.

But I feel like I exist.

How can I just be Infinite Godly Light, but also feel like an independent physical being?

Because God hides His Light so that we aren’t overwhelmed by it and we can enjoy a physical existence.

But if God’s Light is hidden, how does everything come into being?

Enter the paradox: God simultaneously is shining His Infinite Light, giving rise to all of reality; and at the same time, He hides this Light so that we can exist.

How?

By being One with His many Names.

Just like the sun has many layers, and the outer layers shield the solar system from the sun’s nuclear reactor of a core; so too does God have many names, with His name Elokim acting as a shield over the intensity of Havaya.
